Bomb blasts force Baltic to call off fights

Following last Sunday’s bomb blasts that claimed innocent lives over 78 people in Kampala, Baltic Pro Box Promotions Group has decided to call off this month’s boxing showdown that had been set for July 24 at Hotel Africana.
Promoter Eddie Bazira told Sunday Monitor that the act taken was a compassionate one since the nation was still mourning and in utter shock.
“It has been hard for us to postpone this event after we had put in a lot and used a lot of logistics. But it’s understandable.
We are still gutted by the incident that claimed sports-loving fans,” Bazira remarked in the aftermath of a Baltic executive meeting held during the week in the USA.
Local music promoters also postponed their artistes’ musical concerts this weekend. The blasts carried out by the Somali Islamist group, al Shabaab hit Kyadondo rugby grounds and Ethiopian Village restaurant in Kabalagala where soccer lovers were watching the final of World Cup between eventual winners Spain, and Netherlands.
The fight earlier scheduled for Hotel Africana had its main event between two American brand names in the heavy weight category Atila Levin and Robert Daniels.
“We decided to call it off because our American fighters were also scared by the blasts. We will announce the new date for the showdown in the near future,” disclosed Bazira.
Other fighters that were expected to feature include another American Joey Abell, US- based Ugandan welter weight champion Mohammad ‘African Assassin’ Kayongo and Mudde Ntambi who is a rookie in the Baltic’s stable.
